Conservative Talk Replaced By Four Years Of Liberal Action To Build
Prosperity For Our Producers
CROSBY, ON, Sept. 18 /CNW/ - The Ontario Liberals' plan to stand behind
our farmers and protect them from unfair European and American competition is
at risk in the current election campaign, Premier Dalton McGuinty said today.
"The Conservatives talk a lot about rural values, but Ontario Liberals
have actually delivered," the Premier said at the International Plowing Match.
"And what's at stake are the programs we have brought forward to support our
producers and help them succeed."
The Premier pointed to more than $1 billion in support to producers over
the past four years to help address issues like unfairly subsidized
international competition, including $170 million to help beef farmers through
the BSE crisis. The Ontario Liberals have also been standing up for Ontario's
supply management system on the international stage.
Ontario Liberals are also moving ahead with a three-year risk-management
program for the grain and oilseeds sector - with or without the participation
of the federal government. This program was developed with the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture and grain and oilseed farmers.
"We still welcome federal participation, but our producers have been
waiting a long time for help against unfair American and European subsidies,"
the Premier said. "The Conservatives want to keep our producers waiting while
governments keep talking - that's not good enough."
Ontario Liberals will also continue raising consumer awareness of the
excellent, fresh food produced in Ontario through our Buy Ontario strategy,
including $2.5 million annually to help various sectors with their marketing
Along with requiring 5% ethanol content in gasoline, we're also helping
to bring greater innovation into the sector with projects like the Ontario
BioCar which turns harvest materials into materials for the auto industry.
We're also planning to give grant, loan and mentoring assistance to young
farmers and make it easier to pass the family farm down within the family.
"The agri-food sector is changing rapidly and only the Ontario Liberals
are acting to ensure a prosperous future for our producers," the Premier said.
"Let's not go backwards now to a time when our agri-food sector was sustained
on talk alone. Let's keep moving forward for an even stronger future."
