    MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 24 /CNW/ - Social gaming is sweeping the nation and
beginning this week, gamers and fans of the Rock Band 2(TM) video game series
will have a new rock and roll dream to chase: the chance to win $100,000 with
the AMP Your Game National Gaming Tour.
    A new Canadian poll commissioned by AMP ENERGY(R) reports that almost
one-third (31 per cent) of Canadians play music video games like Rock Band.
Among 18 to 34 year olds, that number skyrockets to 61 per cent. These
insights drove AMP ENERGY's decision to bring the wildly successful AMP Your
Game National Gaming Tour to university and college campuses across the nation
where it hopes to audition talented young gamers in a national Rock Band
contest - AMP ENERGY $100,000 Rock Off! The winning band will take home a
guaranteed $100,000 cash prize.
    "AMP ENERGY is dialed into the gaming world, fueling gamers from coast to
coast and this year's AMP Your Game is all about Rock Band," says Cheryl
Radisa, Vice President of Marketing, Pepsi-Cola Brands, PepsiCo Canada. "We're
looking for the nation's top virtual Rock Band to battle hard to win a hundred
thousand dollars, one of the biggest prizes in Canadian gaming. Not bad pocket
change for hungry, wannabe student rockers."
    This year, AMP Your Game will visit 40 campuses between February 23 and
April 23, providing free access to the latest video game titles on all gaming
platforms in a unique entertainment zone. Each campus stop will feature a
two-hour live Rock Band 2 competition on the PlayStation(R) 3 platform.
Four-player bands will virtually perform rock songs on lead guitar, bass
guitar, drums and vocals using special controllers that are modeled after
musical instruments. Each player earns points toward a common score. Bands in
the competition will perform for one of 40 semi-finalist positions.
    Semi-finalist performance videos will be posted on the AMP ENERGY Canada
Facebook page where bands will solicit votes. The top four voted bands will
qualify as finalists to compete in the AMP ENERGY $100,000 Rock Off! finale
following the end of the tour. The finalist band with a combination of best
performance (70 per cent) and game score (30 per cent) will win a guaranteed
$100,000 cash prize.
    Last summer, the first ever AMP Your Game National Gaming Tour broke new
ground in the Canadian gaming landscape, travelling to nine major cities,
searching for the nation's top talent to join Canada's only sponsored pro
gaming team, the AMP ENERGY Pro Team, North of 49. More than 70,000 Canadians
took part in the biggest national gaming tour in Canadian history and many
continue to track the success of the AMP Energy Pro Team on the pro gaming
circuit.
    "Last year's AMP Your Game tour was the first of its kind for Canadian
gamers," says Nelson Triana, captain of the AMP ENERGY Pro Team, North of 49.
"We found our fourth member, Aleks Djukanovic, and we're now competing and
winning on the pro circuit."
    The AMP ENERGY Pro Team members will make appearances throughout this
year's tour, including: February 27 at Ryerson University; March 5 at
Dalhousie University; March 12 at University of Winnipeg; and April 8 at
George Brown College. They will participate in play-a-pro casual competitions
and provide coaching clinics and tips to gamers on-site.
    "It's cool that this year's tour is focusing on the popularity of games
like Rock Band," says Triana. "We know a lot of pro gamers who play and it's
really a new wave that's bringing a different profile of gamer into the
community."
    Given the undeniable popularity of games like Rock Band among serious and
casual gamers alike, AMP ENERGY polled Canadians to find out why they're
playing.

    
    -   53 per cent play because they like the social aspect of playing the
        games with friends and family
    -   11 per cent get a thrill out of pretending to be a rock star
    -   23 per cent like to play because they are music fans
    

    AMP Your Game kicks off this week and will travel across the country to
40 university and college campuses over a nine-week period. In addition to the
Rock Band competitions, each tour stop will feature up to 20 gaming stations
with a variety of popular video game titles for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and
Nintendo Wii.

    From February 6 to February 7, 2009, Angus Reid Strategies conducted an
