MONTREAL, June 29 /CNW Telbec/ - For its fifth edition of A Cultural
Rendezvous on June 30 and July 1st, Pointe-à-Callière, the Montréal Museum of
Archaeology and History, will highlight the presence and distinctiveness of
Montréal's Haitian community.
This great celebration of the city's cultural diversity aims to encourage
encounters between Montrealers of all origins. And this year, Haiti will be at
the heart of the event, building bonds through the massive attendance of its
community members, who number some 50,000 citizens in Montreal.
"The 2007 Cultural Rendezvous is a unique opportunity for the Museum to
highlight the great cultural wealth of one of the most important communities
to have been welcomed to Montréal and to be a part of our recent history,"
emphasized Francine Lelièvre, Pointe-à-Callière's Executive Director.
During the two days of festivities, the Haitian presence will be
noticeable throughout the site: it will be represented by popular singer Toto
Laraque, as well as by musical groups Asrtr, Passion, Makaya Jazz, and Reine
Samba who will get the crowd moving with their hot rhythms.

    Cultural Diversity

The Cultural Rendezvous is also a weekend-long gathering of over
150 artists, craftspeople, vendors, and restaurateurs... all of them
Montrealers of some thirty cultural backgrounds.
Visitors will be able to tour the world right here on site in various
cultural zones that will allow all comers to discover various aspects of the
customs of Haiti, Europe, Latin America, Africa, the West Indies, and the
Orient.
On the programme: music and dance shows, musical parades, games,
samplings of traditional delights from different countries, crafts, and much
more!

    New!

In addition to the strong Haitian presence throughout the site, the
Cultural Rendezvous also has a few new things to offer on the musical front:
twenty Croatian choristers will be on hand to perform choral works, Raoul will
perform Eastern European Klezmer music, Ensemble Montréal Tango will bring us
Argentine music and the famed bolas dance, while singer Barbara Ruiz will
bring to life the music of Cuba.
The group Labess and its Berber music, the Bernard Simard trio with its
modern take on traditional music from Quebec, and the Ensemble Sergiu Popa,
performing music and dance from Eastern Europe, will add a new element to the
performances featured at the event.
A Cultural Rendezvous will also feature several new play areas throughout
the site. The whole family will be able to try their hand at African yoté and
Japanese mikado. They will also be able to play popular games from past years
like awalé, the beanbag toss, tops, Pinnochi, Haitian jacks, and Mexican
dominoes.
