Pharmaceutical distributor and independent pharmacies develop plans to maintain drug supply in the event of spring flooding

Plans include protocols for communications, inventory management and distribution

WINNIPEG, May 6, 2013 /CNW/ - Manitobans can be assured that their independent pharmacy is taking steps to maintain drug supplies for their patients in the event of catastrophic spring flooding.

Last week pharmacist-owned pharmaceutical distributor Procurity, supplier of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications to about 90% of Manitoba's independent pharmacies, submitted its 2013 Spring Flood Preparedness Plan with the office of Health Emergency Management.

"As we are owned by Manitoba pharmacists we are especially dedicated to doing everything possible to maintain continuity of drug supply to our retail pharmacists and, by extension, to the patients in the communities they serve," said Procurity CEO Wayne Rivers.

"Our goal is to provide information and resources to promote and facilitate pharmaceutical care during a crisis, support and assist retail pharmacists in affected areas, and maintain public confidence in the drug supply," added Rivers.

The plan establishes protocols to support continuity of drug supply in the event that flooding damages critical infrastructure. It focuses on communications, inventory management, and emergency medication distribution; all critical to delivering and maintaining access to pharmaceutical care in times of crisis. The plan also respects provincial and national disaster management protocols, standards, and guidelines.

Procurity is the purchasing, distribution, and marketing arm for a network of pharmacies across Canada. Procurity pharmacy retailers include CounterWise Drug Marts and CounterCare Pharmacies which operate in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.
