PEI Housing Starts in July

CHARLOTTETOWN, Aug. 11 /CNW/ - Total urban housing starts for PEI
increased in July compared to the same month last year. According to figures
released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), preliminary
data(1) indicates that a total of 56 starts were reported in July of 2009
compared to 47 in 2008.
Residential construction activity during the month of July was centered
primarily in the Charlottetown area. "An increase in multi-residential starts
last month led to the overall increase in starts for July as 23 multiple
starts were recorded in Charlottetown compared to 8 last year," said Jason
Beaton, market analyst with CMHC. There were 31 single starts recorded in
Charlottetown compared to 39 last year and in Summerside, there were 2 single
starts, down from 3 last year.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in July were down 32
per cent to 10,570 units compared to last year's monthly total of 15,456.
Single-detached starts were down 28 per cent to 5,465 units, while multiple
starts were down 35 per cent in July to 5,105 units compared to 7,603 units
during the same period last year. In the Atlantic region, 858 new units were
started in July compared to 1,144 units in July of last year.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of
experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally
sustainable, and affordable homes - homes that will continue to create vibrant
and healthy communities and cities across the country.
