TORONTO, April 9 /CNW/ - Public Elementary occasional teachers, members
of the Peel Elementary Occasional Teacher Local of the Elementary Teachers'
Federation of Ontario (ETFO), ratified a tentative collective agreement
"This four-year contract is the first one to be negotiated in the GTA for
ETFO's occasional teachers. With improved compensation, recognition for daily
experience, and quicker access to full benefit coverage, I think it adds up to
a good agreement," said ETFO President David Clegg.
"Occasional teachers are fully qualified teachers certified by the
College of Teachers. This deal recognizes the valuable contribution that these
hard working professionals bring to the classroom each and every day. When
boards hire occasional teachers, they are hiring professionals who are worthy
of a permanent teaching position," said Clegg.
"The improvements in this new collective agreement will benefit both
daily and long term occasional teachers and will ensure that high quality
student learning will continue every day with qualified professionals who feel
they are respected by their employer," said Shelly Jan, President of the ETFO
Peel Elementary Occasional Teacher Local.
The Peel Elementary Occasional Teacher Local represents more than 2,244
public elementary occasional teachers and is the second largest ETFO
occasional teacher local in Ontario. Their contract expired August 31, 2008.
The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000
elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
