Peel Occasional Teacher Local President Wins ETFO Newsletter Editor's Award

TORONTO, Aug. 18 /CNW/ - The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario
(ETFO) has honoured Peel Occasional Teacher Local president Shazilla (Shelly)
Jan with the federation's Newsletter Editor's Award (single-sheet category).
The award acknowledges the outstanding work done by editors who have
created at least two issues of a newsletter during the school year. Award
criteria include the content, quality, and general overall appearance of the
newsletter.
As Peel is the second largest occasional teacher local in the province,
on-going communication with all members is critical. The unique two format
design of the PEOT Connections/PEOT Plug-In newsletter allows monthly contact
with all local members, keeping them informed and current on issues and events
such as collective bargaining, professional development, social activism,
upcoming meetings, and other issues that affect their careers as occasional
teachers.
PEOT Connections is mailed out in September and February. It contains a
detailed message from president and editor Jan, keeps members informed on
relevant issues, and provides dates and venues for events and professional
activities planned for the next few months.
In contrast, PEOT Plug-In which is sent to every member via e-mail, is
shorter and keeps members updated on all current issues, reminds them of
upcoming events, deadlines and activities, and informs them of changes and
policies such as pension increases and hiring procedures.
Because members receive one form of the newsletter every three or four
weeks, the local is able to answer questions before they are asked, thus
reducing the number of phone calls and e-mails coming into the office.
"An effective and timely newsletter creates a link between members, the
executive, and local released officers," said ETFO President David Clegg. "It
is apparent from looking at this newsletter that the Peel Occasional Teacher
Local is a vibrant organization with well-informed members."

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario represents 73,000
elementary public school teachers and education workers across the province
and is the largest teacher federation in Canada.
