Pacific Rubiales Provides Update on Union Activity at the Rubiales and Quifa Fields

TORONTO, Sept. 20, 2011 /CNW/ - Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp. (TSX: PRE; BVC: PREC) announced today that a group of unknown persons, who are not employees of the Company, blocked certain internal routes at the Rubiales and Quifa Fields as part of union and political activity taking place outside of Pacific Rubiales' operations. Pacific Rubiales is monitoring the situation very carefully and has taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of its staff and contractors, which is the primary concern of the Company.

The Company has well-established labour practices in place and is compliant with all national and international norms in this respect. The Company also applies and maintains a clear policy regarding benefits and respect for all its employees, including contract workers. All the security measures that have been taken follow the Company's policies and procedures, and are coordinated with Colombia's national security forces, which are responsible for field security.

As a result of this situation, a temporary production halt has been initiated in order to protect the facilities and the property for safe operation.

The Company will continue taking all appropriate measures to maintain the safety of our personnel and contractors and to limit any potential damage arising from this situation. The Company will inform the public when normal operations are re-established in the field.

Pacific Rubiales, a Canadian-based company and producer of natural gas and heavy crude oil, owns 100 percent of Meta Petroleum Corp., a Colombian oil operator which operates the Rubiales and Piriri oil fields in the Llanos Basin in association with Ecopetrol, S.A., the Colombian national oil company. The Company is focused on identifying opportunities primarily within the eastern Llanos Basin of Colombia as well as in other areas in Colombia and northern Peru.
