Overlay.TV named top Canadian Business at Red Herring Awards - Ottawa-based online video startup gets top marks for technology and innovation



    OTTAWA, Sept. 17 /CNW Telbec/ - Overlay.TV, an Canadian startup
determined to change the face of video advertising on the web was honoured
yesterday at the first annual Red Herring Top 50 Awards in Mont Tremblant as
the Ottawa-based company walked away with the top prize. The nominees were
evaluated on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial
performance, technology innovation, quality of management, execution of
strategy and integration into their ecosystem.
    "You build a company in a new space hoping that people will see the same
future that you see," said Rob Lane, President and CEO of Overlay.TV. "Awards
are nice, but knowing that people can look at your product under great
scrutiny and agree on its potential to challenge the status quo and make money
doing it - that's the real validation for me."
    Overlay.TV, an interactive media platform that gives video creators and
viewers the power to add a layer of custom-designed, clickable content over
any embeddable online video through a drag-and-drop interface, launched its
public site earlier this month and has already received acclaim in the
blogosphere and technology news for its innovative approach to online video
advertising.
    To support the launch, Overlay.TV will be sponsoring a weekly news show
about the online video space, hosted by Canadian new media journalist Amber
MacArthur, entitled "The Overview." Set to launch the first episode next week,
the show will take viewers inside the online video space with what's new in
video news, production tips and interviews with video producers and a
spotlight on the platform's best content producers.
    Though focused on creating a tool that is simple for content producers to
create and monetize interactive video, the company's ambitions are much
larger.
    "The reality is that companies want to do more with online video, but
they don't know how to make it profitable," said Ben Watson, Vice President of
Marketing for Overlay.TV. "People don't want to wait through pre-roll ads, but
that's the dominant model because currently, there's nothing better. We're
confident that our tool is going to change that and allow a lot more companies
to enter the online video space with a solid business strategy."
    Nettwerk Records was among the first of these companies to enter the
interactive video space with Overlay.TV, and many more corporate partners will
be announced in the coming weeks.
