Over Twenty-Five Thousand Dogs and Cats Killed in Toronto Pounds: In 2007 this means every second one admitted

TORONTO, April 1 /CNW/ - Figures obtained under freedom of information
legislation show that 25,003 dogs and cats were killed between 2002 and 2007.
"These statistics are appalling and heartbreaking." said Ian McConachie,
Senior Communicator at the Toronto Humane Society.
The combined euthanasia rate in 2007 was 55%. 4130 cats were killed out
of 6284 admitted and 837 dogs were killed out of 2707 admitted.
In comparison the Toronto Humane Society euthanasia rate for 2007 was 7%.
Shockingly, while council spent $54.5 million tax dollars between 2003 -
2008 on animal services, it purports to need more money to care for the
animals and asks for donations for medical care from the public. Donations
amounted to $107,052 in 2008.
The animals and Toronto taxpayers are not getting value for their
dollars. We are asking our supporters and animal lovers to contact their
Councilor and ask for an explanation as to why, year after year, so many
animals are being killed.
