NEW YORK, Feb. 10, 2016 /CNW/ -- Over 1 million students are learning online through courses hosted by edtech startup Teachable.
This number is a testament to a new course creation model that empowers instructors to sell and market their courses rather than joining a marketplace.
Self-described as teacher first, Teachable gives their instructors access to student data and control over branding and pricing allowing instructors to create their own marketing strategies - even if that means removing the Teachable logo.
This differs from course marketplaces who control these aspects and are known to reduce course prices without telling instructors. This means cheaper courses for students, but smaller profits for online teachers.
"Seeing our instructors sharing their knowledge with over one million students is inspiring," Teachable CEO Ankur Nagpal said. "It tells us that the individual course creator has the capacity to market their course and build a business on their own terms rather than relying on a marketplace and incurring forced price reductions. That is something we've always believed here at Teachable and this number - at this speed - proves it."
Teachable was incorporated in May 2014 meaning the company reached the one million student mark in less than two years - faster than other industry players like Udemy and Skillshare.
Teachable currently hosts a large range of classes from cake decorating to programming and online marketing with success being found in all areas of teaching.
"A lot of people think they won't make money unless they teach something technical," Nagpal said. "That just simply isn't the case, we have an instructor teaching watercolor painting and making over $8,000 a month."
Because Teachable doesn't discount course costs, it appeals to instructors who are interested in generating not only passive income but full-time income. In this vein, Teachable instructors have collectively made over $6 million dollars with each teacher making an average of $5,313.12 in total sales, much more than the average income for bloggers.
Ultimately, Teachable believes this is better for students as well.
"Anyone can throw a course onto a marketplace, but our instructors move beyond this. We believe the most motivated people in the world are entrepreneurs. The most successful teachers of the future will be entrepreneurs — and those entrepreneurs are who we are proud to call our customers," Nagpal says.
