OTTAWA, March 28 /CNW/ - A spectacular send off is planned for Martha
Birkett in Ottawa on March 30 as she embarks on the longest horseback ride of
her life, "Giddy Up for Wishes". Martha will ride four horses 3500 km from
Ottawa to Calgary along the TransCanada highway over three months to raise
money for the Children's Wish Foundation. With her extreme love of children
and passion for horses, Martha is starting this journey across our magnificent
country filled with the hope of touching the lives of children with high-risk,
life-threatening illnesses and helping them see that dreams and wishes really
do come true.
Martha's adventures begin at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 30 outside the
Nepean Sportsplex on the Minto Field in Ottawa. With more than one thousand
people on hand, the Children's Wish Foundation will invite attendees to make a
wish for world peace together. This will be the 'World's Biggest Wish' and
creates a new world record. Martha is honoured to carry that precious wish on
her saddle - and gather more from 'wish' children along the way - as she rides
home to Calgary in time for the July Stampede.
"The most beautiful sound is the giggle of a child. My wish is that
people reach into their pockets and donate to 'Giddy Up for Wishes' to bring
out laughs and smiles of health-challenged children," says Martha.
"Giddy Up for Wishes" has captured the hearts of many volunteers who have
helped plan the complex logistics of this unique fundraising initiative in
partnership with the Bearspaw Lions Club of Calgary.
The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada is dedicated to providing
children with high-risk, life-threatening illnesses the opportunity to realize
their most heartfelt wish. The work they do is about dignity, about dreams
come true and about quality of life for children coping with high-risk,
life-threatening illnesses. It is about precious moments spent enjoying the
special magic of a wish fulfilled. It's about allowing families a break from
the day to day trials of tests, treatments, and hospital stays and most
importantly it's about smiles on the faces of very special children.
