PICKERING, ON, Sept. 10 /CNW/ - The Organization of CANDU Industries
(OCI) congratulates AECL on the successful completion of the Phase 2 Design
Review for the ACR-1000, Canada's next-generation CANDU reactor. This
important milestone for the ACR-1000 demonstrates that Canada has developed a
viable technology that warrants a significant position in the world
renaissance.
"We are delighted with the solid progress toward final design approvals,
however, we now need to build an ACR-1000 here in Canada to demonstrate to the
world our confidence in this technology," said OCI President Dr. Neil
Alexander. "It is urgent that we move forward to take advantage of
opportunities in the international marketplace."
The nuclear industry is on the verge of a dramatic expansion as countries
around the world look to nuclear as a reliable source of electric power
generation that does not produce greenhouse gas emissions. It has been
estimated that more than 200 reactors will be built around the world in the
next 20 years representing tremendous economic and job opportunities for
Canada's nuclear industry.
"The member companies of OCI stand ready to manufacture the sophisticated
components and provide the required services to help deliver ACR-1000s on time
and on-budget anywhere in the world," said Dr. Alexander. "Canada's nuclear
supply chain is fully mobilized and very experienced with the CANDU design,
and we are extremely confident in our ability to meet the exacting standards
required of a project like this. We now need decisions made that will allow
Canadians to demonstrate our leadership to the world."
