Organization of CANDU Industries applauds ACR-1000 milestone

OCI members are ready to build components for Canada's first next
    generation CANDU

PICKERING, ON, Feb. 23 /CNW/ - The Organization of CANDU Industries (OCI)
congratulates AECL on the successful completion of the Phase 1 Pre-Project
Design Review for the ACR-1000, Canada's next generation CANDU reactor. This
important milestone brings the ACR-1000 another step closer to
commercialization thereby securing Canada's leadership in the international
marketplace as a premier vendor of Generation III+ reactor technology.
"This design review was one of the final pieces in the puzzle. Now that
it is securely in place, everything is aligned for successful
commercialization," says OCI President Dr. Neil Alexander. "It sends a very
strong message to the international marketplace that Canada should be their
first stop in their search for safe, reliable and efficient sources of clean,
low cost electricity from nuclear power."
CANDU has a very strong supply chain as demonstrated on numerous
occasions in the exemplary track record of the recent CANDU construction
projects. With this passed design review, any buyer of an ACR can be confident
in its timely and cost-effective delivery.
"This success is particularly relevant for Canada at this time of
economic rebuilding as it allows us to retain leadership in one of the few
remaining growing markets. Canada's nuclear industry can be one of our engines
of economic renewal creating jobs in both the knowledge economy and on the
shop floor," says Dr. Alexander.
It's been estimated that more than 200 reactors will be built around the
world in the next 20 years, which represents tremendous economic and job
opportunities for Canada's nuclear industry.
