Ontario Welcomes Back Indy



    McGuinty Government Investing In Major Tourism Draw

    TORONTO, Sept. 18 /CNW/ -

    The Toronto Indy is returning in 2009, and Ontario is partnering with
Tourism Toronto and the City of Toronto to get one of the province's major
summer tourist attractions back on track.
    The province is providing $1 million a year for each of the next three
years to Andretti Green Racing to re-establish the event and draw audiences
from across Ontario, the U.S., and abroad.
    The race generates an estimated $50 million in economic activity,
including $5.1 million in direct tourism spending from visitors to Ontario.
The event also contributes $26 million to the province's Gross Domestic
Product.

racing fans from across the province, the U.S., and overseas," said Tourism
Minister Peter Fonseca. "We're proud to partner with Andretti Green Racing to
re-establish the Toronto Indy as another exciting summer draw for visitors to
our province."

    "We are so excited to be involved with bringing this great event back to
its roots and a huge loyal fan base in Ontario," said Kevin Savoree, President
of Andretti Green Toronto. "Thanks to the generous support of the Ontario
government, we can grow the Toronto Indy into a very strong partnership and
turn our event into a showcase for the province."

        live and repeat television broadcasts.
    -   The Ontario government has supported the Indy since 1997.
    -   The Toronto Indy was first held in 1986. No race was held in 2008.
