TORONTO, May 25 /CNW/ - Ontario universities applaud today's joint
federal-provincial announcement of a capital infusion of $1.2 billion, with
over $800 million going to universities, which will provide students and
faculty with new, cutting edge facilities.
"This is an historic investment in academic infrastructure that will help
both invigorate the economy and provide for enhanced learning and research
environments on our campuses," said Dr. Peter George, Chair of the Council of
Ontario Universities and President of McMaster University.
Today's announcement is the first of two that will cover investments in
new buildings as well as in deferred maintenance projects. In addition, the
provincial government has committed to providing further funds from its long
term capital plan to the PSE sector in future.
"We greatly appreciate the leadership and the exemplary partnership of
the provincial and federal governments in recognizing the important role
universities play in communities across the province," said Dr. Paul C.
Genest, President of the Council of Ontario Universities. "These investments
will create local construction jobs at a time of great economic need and
provide a foundation for the future by helping to develop our talented
graduates and support the research innovations that drive our economy."
Two-thirds of the building space on university campuses is over 30 years
old. New facilities and renovations to existing ones are critical to ensuring
that students and faculty have spaces equipped with the modern technologies
that enhance learning and research infrastructure.
"We thank Ministers Milloy and Clement for these tremendous, generous
investments in Ontario's knowledge infrastructure that will support the
success of our students and the economic recovery of our province," said
