OTF funds $150,000 over 2 years to develop an awareness campaign for
recruiting foster and adoptive parents in Eastern Ontario
OTTAWA, Sept. 6 /CNW Telbec/ - Thanks to a recently awarded Ontario
Trillium Foundation grant, Children's Aid Societies in Eastern Ontario will be
able to develop and implement a comprehensive public awareness campaign that
will highlight the importance of reaching out to children and encouraging
families to commit to becoming a foster or adoptive parent.
"Permanent and safe homes are paramount to the development and well-being
of children and youth," said Jeanette Lewis, Executive Director of the Ontario
Association of children's Aid Societies. "We need to work with families and
the community to protect and care for children - they are our future and the
most vulnerable citizens in our society."
There are 3,451 children and youth in care and 1,554 foster families in
Eastern Ontario, encompassing 12 Children's Aid Societies.
Foster parents will play a vital role in both the development and
implementation of the public awareness campaign and all 12 of the Children's
Aid Societies within the Eastern Ontario district have assigned resources to
assist with this very important project.
"We are very thrilled with the announcement and excited to start the work
with The Ontario Trillium Foundation and with our partner agencies in Eastern
Ontario on this initiative", says Barbara MacKinnon, Executive Director of The
Children's Aid Society of Ottawa. "Recruiting families for children and youth
has been increasingly difficult over recent years; however the need has
remained constant. We need to recruit more foster families and adoptive
families and we are very much appreciative for the funding and support to do
During the first year of funding the project will focus on data gathering
through focus groups, surveys, and the review of existing practices in each
region. Year 2 of the project will include the development and implementation
of the public awareness campaign, which will include the development of new
marketing materials and ad campaigns.
Ontario's Children's Aid Societies protect children from abuse including
neglect, promote their well-being within their families and communities, and
provide a safe, nurturing place for children and youth to grow up.
