Students' Unions Pledged Support Despite Threats from University
TORONTO, Sept. 10 /CNW/ - Students are supporting members of the Canadian
Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 2424 at Carleton who are on strike demanding
to be treated on par with other campus workers. The strike by CUPE 2424,
representing approximately 700 professional, office, technical, and support
staff at Carleton, could shut the campus down just as classes are set to
"It is unfortunate that the administration is willing to put students'
academic year at risk rather than bargaining fairly with these workers," said
Jen Hassum, Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario. "We
are calling on the Carleton administration to get back to the table and
bargain with CUPE 2424 representatives in a way that recognises the
contribution made by these workers."
The Carleton University Student Association (CUSA) and the Graduate
Students' Association (GSA), Locals 1 and 78 of the Canadian Federation of
Students respectively, have joined the workers' unions on campus calling for a
fair deal for members of CUPE 2424.
The presidents of both students' unions, who also serve as elected
representatives to the University's Board of Governors, received phone calls
from David Dunn the Board's Chair, questioning their right to publicly comment
on the strike. To CUSA President Shelly Melanson, Dunn suggested that she
consider stepping down unless she tows the University's line.
"It is shameful that the right to free speech and the right to support
unfairly treated workers is being threatened at a public university," said
Hassum. "The support for members of CUPE 2424 from students at Carleton and
across the country is important in its own right, but it is also symbolic of
the student-worker solidarity right across this country. No amount of
intimidation will back us away from this position."
On Tuesday September 11, CUSA and the GSA are planning a major rally to
support CUPE 2424 workers.
The Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario unites over 300,000 college
and university students from more than 35 students' unions across the
