    TORONTO, Oct. 24 /CNW/ -

    NEWS

Today, the Hon. Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and
Mines, proudly recognized the government-owned facility at 189 Red River Road
in Thunder Bay by presenting the 2008 Earth Award to representatives of the
Ontario Realty Corporation. The award from the Building Owners & Managers
Association (BOMA) honours "exceptional efforts to promote environmental
excellence in the commercial building industry".
The BOMA Canada Earth Award is presented to operators of a building that
have made significant efforts to address environmental challenges. The winners
are recognized for demonstrating leadership in implementing new and innovative
approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate
change.

    QUOTES

"The ORC recognizes the vital role government realty assets play not only
in providing service delivery, but also in protecting the environment," said
Dave Glass, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Realty
Corporation. "We have a leading role in reducing the carbon footprint of
government buildings for the benefit of future generations in Ontario."
"Receiving BOMA BESt certification means that we have made significant
strides to reduce energy consumption in a highly recognizable building here in
Thunder Bay," said Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and
Mines and the MPP for Thunder Bay-Superior North. "It shows that, as tenants
here, we make the environment a priority in everything we do."
"The BOMA BESt certification recognizes environmental excellence in the
management and operation of commercial buildings, like the Red River Road
facility," said Nada Sutic, Manager, Green Initiatives at BOMA. "This is a
great example of what building managers can achieve in existing assets -
excellence in environmental management can build green capital."

    QUICK FACTS

    - The ORC conducted initial energy audits in 2004 in order to identify
areas to reduce energy consumption in government buildings
province-wide and followed up with an aggressive repair program in
       2005-06.

    - The Red River Road facility is one of twenty-five government-owned
buildings in the Ontario Realty Corporation portfolio to be certified
Go Green Plus (now BOMA BESt) this year, and one of two facilities in
Thunder Bay to receive the recognition.

    - The Ontario Government Building at 435 James Street South in Thunder
Bay has also been certified BOMA Go Green Plus (now BOMA BESt).
