Hon. Michael Gravelle presents Earth Award for Red River Road

Today, the Hon. Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and
Mines, proudly recognized the government-owned facility at 189 Red River Road
in Thunder Bay by presenting the 2008 Earth Award to representatives of the
Ontario Realty Corporation. The award from the Building Owners & Managers
Association (BOMA) honours "exceptional efforts to promote environmental
excellence in the commercial building industry".
The BOMA Canada Earth Award is presented to operators of a building that
have made significant efforts to address environmental challenges. The winners
are recognized for demonstrating leadership in implementing new and innovative
approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate

The Ontario Realty Corporation is taking leadership on reducing
greenhouse gas emissions in each of its buildings provincewide in order to
reduce the carbon footprint and create a cleaner, greener future for our
The provincially owned building at 189 Red River Road, Thunder Bay was
one of 25 buildings in the Ontario Realty Corporation portfolio to be
certified as Go Green Plus (now BOMA BESt) during the 2007-08 fiscal year by
the Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA). In addition, this facility
received the honour of winning an Earth Award, for being the "best of class"
for BOMA BESt facilities in the 100,000 to 249,999 square foot category.
BOMA GO GREEN
BOMA Go Green is a national environmental recognition and certification
program for existing commercial buildings. The Ontario Realty Corporation
started undertaking BOMA Go Green Plus assessments for government buildings of
a certain size in 2006-07.
This fiscal year, twenty-five government-owned buildings in the ORC
portfolio achieved certification, including:
