                  McGuinty Government Fast Tracking Transit

    TORONTO, May 12 /CNW/ -

    NEWS

GO Transit and Metrolinx are being merged to build transit faster, ease
congestion, create jobs and build a stronger economy.
The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area Transit Implementation Act, 2009,
passed third reading today and will combine transit planning and building into
a single organization, under the name Metrolinx. The result will be a faster
start on projects included in the government's Regional Transportation Plan
and thousands more jobs in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area.
Under the new act the Ontario government will appoint a board of up to 15
members with expertise in planning, finance and infrastructure development.
The final board will be announced shortly.
The new law comes into effect upon Royal Assent.

    QUOTES

"Getting shovels in the ground faster on new transit projects means
better service for commuters. It will also generate thousands of construction
jobs over the coming years," said Transportation Minister Jim Bradley
