Ontario Government Recognizes Outstanding Public Servants

    Amethyst Awards Honour Public Service Working For Ontarians

    TORONTO, June 19 /CNW/ - Secretary of the Cabinet Tony Dean today
honoured the winners of the Amethyst Awards, which recognize excellence in the
Ontario Public Service (OPS).
    "In every ministry, in every office, in every job they do, Ontario's
public servants strive to make a real, positive difference for Ontario
families," said Premier McGuinty. "We are proud to recognize the work of a
public service that is second to none."
    The Amethyst Awards, which were established in 1992, recognize
individuals and groups in the OPS who have made outstanding contributions in
client service, innovation, valuing people and professional achievement.
    This year, public servants from 16 Ministries were awarded 26 awards for
accomplishments that included:

    - Extraordinary leadership in promoting and protecting the health of
        Ontarians and transforming public health in Ontario;
    - Outstanding innovation in the implementation of a case management
        team for high risk cases of violence;
    - Development and launch of a Girl Guide Emergency Preparedness
        Challenge;
    -   Developing Ontario's first community-based land use strategy;
    - Provision of a once in a lifetime camp opportunity for over 400 at
        risk kids; and
    - Vision and leadership in building a process for consultation between
        First Nation communities and the mineral industry in northern
        Ontario.

    This year also marks the first time that the Sandra D. Lang Lifetime
Achievement Award - created in honour of the late Deputy Minister, Sandra Lang
- was presented to two individuals who have dedicated a lifetime of exemplary
service to the OPS.
    "Dedicated and passionate people are at the heart of the OPS," said Tony
Dean. "Our Amethyst Award recipients are being recognized for their pursuit of
excellence in public service. I am proud to join the Premier and the OPS in
celebrating their achievements."
    The award is a trophy featuring the Ontario amethyst, the provincial
mineral. Recipients also receive a lapel pin and certificate signed by the
Premier and the Secretary of the Cabinet.
