Ontario environment companies welcome new provincial initiative

    TORONTO, March 4 /CNW/ - The organization representing Ontario's
environment industry welcomed an announcement today by the provincial
government to fast-track applications to the $1.15B Next Generation of Jobs
Fund. At a Toronto event, Premier McGuinty and the Ministers of Research and
Innovation and Economic Development and Trade outlined a plan to specifically
support companies that develop products that reduce pollution, save energy,
make transportation more efficient or help the environment in other ways.
"This is the type of policy leadership that environment companies have
been calling for from Ontario's government," said Alex Gill, the Executive
Director of the Ontario Environment Industry Association (ONEIA).
"Streamlining the application process to help these companies grow and create
next generation jobs is good news for our economy - and good news for our
environment."
Ontario is home to more than 45% of Canada's environment firms. The
sector has experienced strong growth in recent years, driven by rising
concerns by businesses, governments and individuals about a variety of
environmental issues. According to Statistics Canada, the province's more than
2,400 environment firms already employ more than 60,000 people and generate
almost $8-billion per year in annual revenue.
