Ontario Dances pilot program announced

TORONTO, June 3 /CNW/ - The Ontario Arts Council is pleased to announce
the launch of Ontario Dances, a 3-year pilot program to develop a better
understanding and appreciation of dance by both audiences and presenters.

    FACTS

    - The purpose of this initiative is to have more live dance
performances in more Ontario communities and more people interested
and engaged in dance. It aims to increase the range and diversity of
dance available to communities outside Toronto. Program goals
        include:

Audience development - encourage more people to participate in dance
through education programs led by local dance animators and involving
        dance artists.

Curatorial development - help presenters with professional
development and networking opportunities that expand their knowledge
        of dance in Ontario.

Presentation of Ontario dance artists - support presenters in their
artistic risk taking to expose audiences to dance works that may be
        new to them.

    - There are seven participants in this pilot:
        - Brock Centre for the Arts, St. Catharines
        - Capitol Theatre, North Bay
        - Kiwanis Theatre, Chatham
        - Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts
        - Orillia Opera House
        - River Run Centre, Guelph
        - Waterloo Dance Projects/The Registry Theatre, Kitchener
    - Each presenter will:
        - Present one Ontario-based dance company in each year of the pilot
and include arts education and learning programs,
        - Engage a local dance animator to facilitate programs which may
include artist talks, master classes, or workshops for
           recreational and professional participants,
        - Attend performances of Ontario dance companies throughout the
           pilot, and
        - Attend professional development and networking opportunities,
including the Canada Dance Festival (http://www.canadadance.ca/)
           in 2008 and 2010.
    - The pilot program is administered by CCI - Ontario Presenting
Network. It will also involve Réseau Ontario in aspects of
professional development and program evaluation to determine how this
model may also impact the francophone presenting community in any art
        form.
