TORONTO, Oct. 29 /CNW/ - The Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) is pleased
to announce the appointment of Mr. Michael (Mike) J. Garrett as the Chair of
its Board of Directors.
Mr. Garrett brings the Agency and its clients nearly 40 years of
high-level public sector experience, gained in some of Ontario's largest and
fastest-growing communities. This wealth of municipal experience includes
successful tenures as Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of:
- The Regional Municipality of York (2002-2007),
- The City of Toronto (1997-2001), and
- The Regional Municipality of Peel (1989-1997).
Prior to his nearly two decades of work as CAO in these communities, Mr.
Garrett also held a succession of postings with the Ministry of Natural
Resources from 1981 to 1989, including serving as Assistant Deputy Minister.
"I am honoured to be able to serve as Chair of OCWA's Board of
Directors," said Mr. Garrett. "In my years working with some of Ontario's
largest municipalities, I became quite familiar with the Agency and its superb
reputation. Together with the other members of the Agency's Board of
Directors, senior management team and employees throughout Ontario, we look
forward to carrying on this tradition of excellence."
"We are delighted to welcome an individual as experienced, accomplished
and respected as Mike Garrett to chair OCWA's Board of Directors," said Dante
Pontone, President and CEO of OCWA. "We have every confidence that his
experience and leadership abilities will help the Agency build on a very
successful track record of providing safe, reliable water and wastewater
services to our clients throughout Ontario."
Members of OCWA's Board of Directors are appointed by the
Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council. The Board sets the Agency's strategic
direction, reviews and monitors performance, ensures sound financial
management and proper reporting. In 2007, the Agency's governance structure
was strengthened thanks to a move toward appointing independent directors to
its Board, consistent with the recommendations of Mr. Justice O'Connor's
report on the Walkerton Inquiry.
OCWA operates more than 500 water and wastewater facilities in Ontario -
more than any other operating authority. The Agency's mission is to
demonstrate service excellence to its clients through the delivery of safe,
reliable and cost-effective water and wastewater services. As an Agency of the
Province, OCWA is also prepared to provide emergency response services in the
event of provincial drinking water emergencies. For example, OCWA assumed
operational responsibility for the local water operations in Walkerton in 2000
during that Town's water contamination crisis.
The Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) provides environmentally
responsible and cost-effective water and wastewater services to
municipalities, institutions, industry and First Nations. Established as a
provincial crown Agency in 1993, OCWA operations, engineering, and technical
services provide expertise to businesses and communities all across Ontario.
