McGuinty Government Invests In Athletes, Promotes Ontario
VANCOUVER, Jan. 26 /CNW/ - Ontario is joining with other provinces to
help our athletes reach the podium at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and
Paralympic Winter Games.
"Ontarians are proud Canadians, and we want to do our part to support our
athletes and everyone who is working so hard to make these the best Games
ever," said Premier McGuinty.
The government will invest $5 million to support Canadian athletes,
promote Ontario and help welcome the world. Two top Ontario athletes,
freestyle skier Veronica Brenner and snowboarder Katie Tsuyuki, joined Premier
McGuinty for today's announcement.
"The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will give us an
extraordinary opportunity to showcase Canada and Ontario to the world," said
Tourism Minister Peter Fonseca.
Part of the funding will go towards the Own the Podium 2010 program
(www.ownthepodium2010.com), which helps Canada's athletes compete and win.
Ontario artists and performers will also take part in the Vancouver 2010
Nearly 7,000 athletes and officials from more than 80 countries are
expected to participate in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter
Games. Canada's goal is to finish first in medals won and rank among the top
three nations in the gold medal standings.
