Ontarians Stand Up For Fairness

Over 15,000 Sign McGuinty Government's Petition For Fairness

TORONTO, Oct. 12 /CNW/ - Ontarians from every corner of the province have
responded to Premier Dalton McGuinty's call for fairness from the federal
government.
More than 15,000 people signed a petition on the fairness.ca
(http://www.fairness.ca) site between September 22 and October 12.
Premier McGuinty wrote to federal party leaders and Ontario candidates
asking what they would do to restore fairness if elected. Liberal leader
Stéphane Dion (http://webx.newswire.ca/click/?id=54e1e9215f90575), NDP leader
Jack Layton (http://www.fairness.ca/english/standup/ndp_res/layton_en.pdf) and
candidates from the Liberal, NDP and Green parties replied to the letter. One
candidate from the Conservative party has replied.
Every year, Ontario taxpayers send more than $20 billion to the rest of
Canada. A recent TD Economics report
(http://www.td.com/economics/special/db0908_ont.jsp) said that $11.8 billion
of that represented discrimination against Ontario.

    QUOTES

"I want to thank Ontarians for standing up for a fair deal for their
province. They know that now, more than ever, we need to keep more of our own
money so we can invest it to make us more competitive," said Premier Dalton
McGuinty.

    QUICK FACTS

    - The federal government has economic development programs for people
in Atlantic Canada, the north, Quebec, and the west - but not

        funding for infrastructure projects.
    - Laid-off workers in Ontario get $4,600 less in employment insurance
