Only 37% of Security Professionals Believe PCI Compliance Protects Consumers

    SAN FRANCISCO, June 20 /CNW/ -- Thirty-seven percent of 101 IT security
professionals surveyed believe the PCI data security standard -- which has
been under increasing scrutiny in the wake of the TJX and other high-profile
security breaches involving credit card data -- is sufficient to protect
consumers. Forty-one percent said the standard is insufficient to protect
consumers. nCircle, the leading provider of agentless security risk and
compliance management solutions, conducted the survey from March 13 to May 3,
2007.

According to Elizabeth Ireland, Vice President for nCircle, "The fact
that only 37% feel PCI compliance sufficiently protects consumers reflects a
growing awareness in the IT community of the difference between compliance and
security. In other words, even if a merchant is PCI compliant, this is not a
guarantee that the data PCI intends to protect is secure. In acknowledging
this challenge, organizations will increasingly seek solutions and processes
that help organizations to be both secure and compliant."
