TORONTO, March 8 /CNW/ - Just a week to go until one of the most
eagerly-anticipated annual occasions is here: St. Patrick's Day.
Make that seven days and 119.5 seconds.
Fans of Guinness Draught know that a pint of the ice cold, ultra-smooth
stout is the proper (perhaps only?) way to toast St. Patrick's Day. And
despite having waited all year for the big day to arrive, they're also willing
to wait an extra 119.5 seconds - the ideal time for their pint of Guinness to
properly settle. "The storm before the calm" as it's known.
Anticipation is a key part of the Guinness experience. Unlike lagers and
most other beers which tend to be carbonated (using carbon dioxide), Guinness
Draught is pressurized with a gas mix composed mostly of nitrogen. That helps
give Guinness its smooth, not-too-fizzy character - and it's the nitrogen
pushing its way to the top of the glass that creates the swirling effect in a
freshly-poured pint of Guinness Draught. Guinness' own research has determined
that 119.5 seconds is the ideal period of time required for a pint to properly
settle prior to serving.
How long will Canadians wait for a properly-poured pint? According to a
national public opinion poll conducted by POLLARA Inc., most respondents said
"as long as it takes."
And, not surprisingly, a whopping 83 per cent of those surveyed agree
that good things do indeed come to those who wait.
The waiting IS the hardest part. But we're almost there. Happy St.
