TORONTO, March 4 /CNW/ - Without any public consultation, the Toronto
District School Board Trustees will be voting on whether to cut 1/3 of the
aquatic instructors at the TDSB. This is being done without having made any
decision on closing pools located in the schools.
Currently there are 107 instructors who make sure children are taught
basic water safety and how to swim. Twenty seven may be laid off after
tomorrow night's meeting.
"There's good news and bad news," said instructor Nancy Campbell. "The
good news is our kids are at the Etobicoke Olympian pool competing at the
OFSSA (Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletics) are ranked 1st, 2nd
and 3rd; the bad news is if we keep cutting swim instructors, our kids will no
longer be there."
Campbell continued, "What a shame! The Girl's Medley team from Sir
Wilfred Laurier CI came in first and I am afraid these victories will be a
thing of the past."
Aquatic Instructors will be available to speak with the press:
Wednesday, March 5
Toronto District School Board - lobby
5050 Yonge Street
