OMDC's support to the music industry stimulates growth

Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) invested over $600,000 in
Ontario's music sector through its Music Fund and Export Fund and by
supporting strategic initiatives for Ontario independent music labels' and
publishers' trade organization since April 1, 2008 to date.
The OMDC Music Fund provided support to 16 Ontario independent music
labels and music(http://www.omdc.on.ca/PageFactory.aspx?PageID=5205)
publishers in the amount of $400,000. The OMDC Music
Fund(http://www.omdc.on.ca/PageFactory.aspx?PageID=3213) enables independent
Ontario-based record companies and music publishers to create and implement
new strategic business and marketing initiatives. In past years, the OMDC
Music Fund has been proud to support a diverse range of projects. Successful
projects have included domestic and international marketing campaigns, human
resources programs, as well as on-line ventures and other business development
initiatives. In 2008, Canadian-owned-and-controlled, Ontario-based record
companies and music publishers, could apply for funding up to $50,000 from the
OMDC Music Fund program.
Through the OMDC Export
Fund(http://www.omdc.on.ca/PageFactory.aspx?PageID=3304) - Music OMDC provided
support in the amount of $200,000 to 20 Ontario independent music
labels(http://www.omdc.on.ca/PageFactory.aspx?PageID=5206) to attend such key
international markets and festivals as: Popkomm (Berlin, Germany), MIDEM
(Cannes, France) and South By Southwest (Austin, Texas). OMDC also supported
music labels to attend a number of genre-based conferences, such as the
Amsterdam Dance Conference and the Americana Music Conference, as well as to
attend other key markets in London and Los Angeles. The OMDC Music Export Fund
provides eligible Ontario companies with funding to participate in export
development activities that correspond to a strategy for company growth.
As well, OMDC supported unique and strategic music initiatives and events
that include business-to-business opportunities for Ontario's music industry,
including the following:
- OMDC provided support to the Canada Stand and Canadian Blast Showcase
organized by Canadian Independent Record Production Association
(CIRPA)(http://cirpa.ca/) at Popkomm(http://tinyurl.com/25lf2y) held
in Berlin, Germany in October 2008. The Canada Stand activities
included a full complement of business and networking activities
targeted to supporting Canadians in the international marketplace.
- OMDC is a sponsor and panel participant of the International Buyers
Program (IBP) to be held on October 22 and 23-26, 2008 at Ontario
Council of Folk Festivals (OCFF)(http://www.ocff.ca/) in Ottawa.
- OMDC is proud to continue its support for the second CIRPA's Music
Mission to Asia (http://tinyurl.com/3fyany) (November 10 - 15, 2008
in Tokyo, Japan) that will provide Ontario music labels and their
artists opportunities to strengthen and form new relationships in the
$3.5 billion Asian marketplace. OMDC is presenting the Pan Asian
component of the mission and co-sponsoring the Showcase at the
Canadian Embassy in Tokyo.

we co-hosted (with Starfish Entertainment) an extremely successful showcase

very effective in establishing the artistic credibility of our artists and our
companies to a targeted group of influential members of the media and industry

make valuable connections with Asian music business contacts.
An Overview of the Financial Impact of the Canadian Music Industry -
Executive Summary(http://www.omdc.on.ca/AssetFactory.aspx?did=6273) is an
OMDC-supported study commissioned by the Canadian music industry. The study
explores for the first time the full economic scope of music in Canada. In
addition to the production and sales of recorded music such as CDs and digital
songs, the report covers music publishing, live performances, the use of music
in radio broadcasting, and musical instruments and lessons.
