TORONTO, June 2 /CNW/ - As we get ready to embrace the warmer months,
Olay Skin Care is empowering Canadian women to become informed about the
dangers of skin cancer and to share information with their friends. Skin
Cancer Takes Friends sponsored by Olay, is a national awareness campaign
designed to educate women about sun protection, early detection and prevention
of skin cancer. The campaign launched on April 11, 2008 with a new website,
"While many women are now aware of the benefits of using moisturizers
with UV protection, skin cancer incidences continue to increase," says
Jennifer Macdonald, Olay Canada Marketing. "Skin Cancer Takes Friends helps
women to protect themselves and their loved ones."
"While some people are more at risk than others, it's important for women
to know that anyone can develop skin cancer regardless of skin colour,
ethnicity, age or family history," says Dr. Kucy Pon, Toronto dermatologist
and consultant to Olay. "The good news is that, melanoma is the only
preventable cancer. When detected and treated early, melanoma is almost 100
per cent curable."
Canadian women can visit SkinCancerTakesFriends.ca to get information and
can send customizable e-cards to friends and family members. E-cards remind
recipients that it's okay to show a little skin this summer as long as you
remember to wear products with SPFs. Visitors who send ten e-cards will
receive two "Sun Awareness" charm bracelets - one for them and one for someone
they care about.
"Friendships play a key role in educating people about skin cancer. Our
goal is to help people understand the importance of daily protection and self
detection, and encouraging them to share that information with their friends
and loved ones," says Macdonald.
There are three components to the Skin Cancer Takes Friends campaign:
Protect: Wear a sunscreen every day, even on cloudy days.
Detect: By visiting SkinCancerTakesFriends.ca, learn the ABCDs of skin
cancer detection, and recognize the signs. Check moles and freckles for
changes in: Asymmetry, Border, Colour, and Diameter.
Share: Pass along the message to friends and family to make them aware
about the risks of skin cancer. The website makes it easy to send eye-opening
facts, articles, videos and fun e-cards to friends and family.
Beginning April 11, 2008, log onto SkinCancerTakesFriends.ca to find
useful information on skin cancer protection and detection.
Olay has several facial moisturizing and anti-aging products which
contain protection from UV rays, including Olay Complete Defense SPF 30, which
protects skin from 97 per cent of the sun's harmful rays. For more information
