Nuts4Ribs Encourages Men to Grab Their Meat: Sons of Maxwell, Rib-Eating Contest All Part of Entertainment



    HALIFAX, Aug. 19 /CNW/ - It's said that the best way to a man's heart and
soul is through his stomach. That's why Nuts4Ribs - Canada's only ribfest
which brings the issue of testicular cancer to light - is back. Bigger and
better, on Saturday, August 22, the Halifax waterfront will be buzzing with
activity for all-ages, and more importantly, raising awareness of testicular
cancer.
    This year's event, hosted on the Halifax waterfront next to the
Waterfront Warehouse restaurant, is packed with entertainment. Back by popular
demand is the 3rd Annual Cojones Cook-Off where 12 contestants will compete
for the title of best ribs and sauce by demonstrating their culinary expertise
to a panel of 10 judges. Also back is the 2nd Annual Investors Group
Rib-Eating Contest. Last year, several hundred people gathered to watch 13
contestants attempt to devour more than 5lbs of ribs in seven minutes. Sixteen
are confirmed this year. This event will take place at 5:30pm.
    Patrons will also be treated to an all-star musical line-up of local
talent, which includes Canadian Idol star Mitch MacDonald, local sensations
Telfer and The Mellotones, and last year's favourites, The BBQ Kings. Rounding
out the evening will be The Sons of Maxwell, fresh off their recent "United
Breaks Guitars" fame. The Sons will be performing the sequel to their hit song
live for the first time at Nuts4Ribs (6:00 p.m.). Closing out will be blues
specialist Garret Mason and musical icon Matt Minglewood. For a schedule of

    Title Sponsor, the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC), believes in the
event and the cause behind it.

health-related causes made our decision to sponsor Nuts4Ribs easy," said Marie
Mullally, NSGC President & CEO. "Awareness of testicular cancer, like many
other cancers, is the best prevention practice available and Nuts4Ribs does an
excellent job of raising much-needed awareness about this important health
issue."
    More than a thousand pounds of ribs, pulled pork, smoked brisket, beans,
slaw and salads are expected to delight the palates of seasoned and
non-seasoned barbeque aficionados. The event's purpose is to raise awareness
around testicular cancer and men's health issues as statistics show that one
in 300 Nova Scotian men are at risk of being affected by the disease.
    This family-friendly event will also have a children's play area, a
3-on-3 ball hockey tournament for all ages and a beer garden sponsored by
Sleeman Breweries.
    Admission to the event is free. Gates open beside the Waterfront
Warehouse restaurant from 11:00 a. m. - 11: 00 p.m. Guests can purchase food
and beverages and Nuts4Ribs merchandise on-site and are encouraged to use
public transportation and bring lawn chairs. Menus and pricing will be
provided on arrival.
