NSSBA Responds to Minister's Move to Limit Powers of Strait Board

DARTMOUTH, NS, Feb. 26 /CNW/ - The Nova Scotia School Boards Association
(NSSBA) is concerned that the actions of the Strait Regional School Board has
prompted the Minister of Education to restructure the oversight
responsibilities for the human resources and finance functions.
"We are pleased that the current board chair, along with three former
chairs, will be available to Dr. John Sears to assist him with performing his
responsibilities," says NSSBA President Elliott Payzant. Sears is a former
academic who has been appointed to assume authority over the board's human
resources and financial management duties until the school board elections in
October.
The NSSBA has identified effective governance as a key component for
school board leadership to have a positive impact on student achievement.
School board governance will be the main focus of a spring forum featuring
research from the Iowa School Boards Foundation that indicates effective board
leadership has a positive impact on student achievement. School Boards=Student
Success will be held May 8-9 at the Holiday Inn Harbourview in Dartmouth for
board members, administrators, educators and parents, including members of
School Advisory Councils (SACs) and Home and School Associations. Anyone
considering running in this fall's school board elections is encouraged to
attend.
The association will be holding meetings with the Minister of Education
to develop strategies to avoid any future need for such drastic actions.
