November is National Health Food Month Celebrate your Health Naturally!



    TORONTO, Oct. 30 /CNW/ - The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA)
celebrates the decision of Canadians to manage their own health naturally with
an awareness initiative that focuses on health promotion and disease
prevention during National Health Food Month this coming November.
    The theme of this year's month-long campaign is "Celebrate your Health
Naturally!" and congratulates the increasing number of Canadians who are
discovering the health benefits of natural and organic products as a way to
seek optimal health and quality of life.
    Today more than 24 million people are using some kind of natural product
with the intention of maintaining and promoting personal health, according to
a commissioned study for Health Canada by Ipsos-Reid in 2005. In addition,
more consumers are purchasing organic products as retail sales of organic food
surpassed $1-billion in 2006.
    In fact, Health Canada recognized that vitamin and mineral supplements
play a key role in helping Canadians maintain good health when it released the
new Food Guide earlier this year recommending women of childbearing age take a
multivitamin containing folic acid every day and suggesting pregnant women
ensure their multivitamin contains iron. Health Canada also advised Canadian
men and women over the age of 50 to take a daily vitamin D supplement of 400
IU. In addition, earlier this year two public health organizations, the
Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Paediatric Society, publicly endorsed
higher dosages of vitamin D for adults that go beyond Health Canada's new
recommendations.

    
    The CHFA would like consumers to consider these key points when they
choose to maintain and promote their health with natural and organic products:

    -   Health Canada's Natural Health Products Regulations, which came into
        force in 2004 with a transition period to 2010, help ensure consumers
        have ready access to safe, effective natural health products, and the
        information necessary to make informed choices.

    -   The new Canada organic logo, unveiled in July 2007, as part of the
        Organic Products Regulations announced in December 2006, will help
        consumers identify certified organic products that conform to
        Canada's organic regulations when fully implemented in December 2008.

    -   Consumers across the country can look to their natural health
        retailers to provide sound information, products and services in
        order to make the right choices that promote good health.
    

    Natural and organic product retailers and suppliers across Canada will be
educating their customers about National Health Food Month as a means to
celebrate natural and organic products as components of optimal health and
disease prevention.

    The Canadian Health Food Association (www.chfa.ca) is Canada's largest
