Notice of meeting - Today at noon at BioContact Quebec 2007 - Presentation of The H.L. Holmes Award and Conference by Dr. Francis S. Collins M.D., Ph.D.

QUEBEC, Oct. 3 /CNW Telbec/ - Martin Godbout, president of Genome Canada
and founder of BioContact Quebec, is proud to announce that two events will
mark the launch of the 14th BioContact Quebec 2007 Symposium during the dinner
served in the Château Frontenac ballroom.

Presentation of the H.L. Holmes Award
    --------------------------------------

Mr. Pierre Coulombe, president of the National Research Council of
Canada, will officially announce the winner of the H.L. Holmes Award. Financed
through Mr. Holmes' legacy in recognition for the NRCC's determination to
promote excellence in research, this award, valued at $198,000 over a two-year
period, allows the winner to do postdoctoral research under the direction of
reputable researchers in a world-renowned university or institute.

Conference by Dr. Francis S. Collins M.D., Ph.D.
    ------------------------------------------------

Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Human Genome Research
Institute (NHGRI), will host a conference under the theme "Genomics and
cancer".
Let's note that Francis S. Collins is a physician-geneticist, recognized
for his landmark discoveries of disease genes and his leadership of the Human
Genome Project (HGP). In 1993, Dr Collins succeeded James Watson and became
director of the National Centre for Human Genome Research. In this capacity,
he oversaw the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium and was
therefore the first to sequence the Human Genome.
In addition to his long list of contributions to basic genetic research
and to his scientific leadership, Dr. Collins is known for his close attention
to ethical and legal issues in genetics. He has been a strong advocate for the
protection of privacy of genetic information and has served as a national
leader in efforts to prohibit gene-based insurance discrimination. Building on
his own experiences as a physician volunteer in a rural missionary hospital in
Nigeria, Dr. Collins is also very interested in opening avenues for genome
research to benefit the health of people living in developing nations.
Numerous awards and honours, including election to the Institute of Medicine
and the National Academy of Sciences have recognized Dr. Collins'
accomplishments.
