Clark, the celebrated left-winger who retired from the Toronto Maple
Leafs in 2000, now works as the Leafs' goodwill ambassador. He, his wife,
Denise, and their three children live on 40 acres north of Toronto, in King
County. A feature of their property, surrounded by cornfields and meadows, is
the 5,500-square-foot hockey arena. The building was designed as a horse
stable and riding arena.
"I know a little bit about horses," says Clark, who grew up in the
farming community of Kelvington, Saskatchewan, "but I know a lot about rinks
and ice. I like rinks and ice."
Clark began and ended his hockey career in Toronto, where he played 11
full seasons. He had 330 career goals, 234 assists, and 1,690 minutes of
penalties. The hockey arena, a short walk from the family's home, is well used
by the Clarks' three youngsters and their friends. Their son's hockey team has
regular practices there. And the adjacent, rubber-floored family room,
complete with furnishings and satellite TV, is a gathering spot for kids and
hockey moms and dads. The Clarks sometimes host charity events, such as
old-timer hockey tournaments, at their arena.
Clark maintains the ice with the help of two natural gas chillers, and is
meticulous about flooding and grooming the surface. "It's my day job," he
jokes, calling himself a "rink rat." Arguably, he's one of Canada's most
qualified rink rats.
Also on Clark's plate is his new business venture, Wendel Clark's Classic
Grill and Sports Lounge, in Vaughan, Ontario, near his home.
Acreage Life is owned by Western Producer Publications. The magazine
launched in 2005 and publishes five times a year.
