Nexterra Energy receives Gowlings Clean Tech Award from the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATA)

VANCOUVER, June 11 /CNW/ - Nexterra Energy Corp. (www.nexterra.ca) has
received the 2008 Gowlings Clean Tech Award which was presented at the 23rd
annual CATAAlliance Innovation and Leadership Awards Gala held in Ottawa.
In making the presentation, Andrew Foti, Partner of Gowling Lafleur
Henderson LLP (Gowlings), said the award recognizes outstanding technology
engineering development that has resulted in a "world class product or family
of products." Nexterra's biomass gasification technology converts wood residue
into a renewable syngas that displaces fossil fuels in industrial,
institutional and power generation markets.
"Nexterra's technology has proven itself in commercial operation, and its
market success has enhanced Canada's international reputation for innovation
and design excellence," said Foti.
Jonathan Rhone, Nexterra's President and CEO, said the award acknowledges
the tremendous achievements made by Nexterra's employees, partners and
financial supporters in the five years since the company was formed.
"Nexterra is fortunate to have attracted some of the best and brightest
people in the business and an A-list of industrial, institutional and
financial partners," said Rhone. "While we have already accomplished much, we
believe we have really only scratched the surface of the technology's
potential to significantly reduce customer energy costs and greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions."
Tolko Industries has been operating a Nexterra biomass gasification
system at its plywood mill in Heffley Creek, B.C. since 2006, generating about
$2 million in annual fuel savings and 12,000 tonnes of GHG reductions.
Nexterra, in partnership with Johnson Controls (JCI), recently completed
construction of a cogeneration plant at the University of South Carolina. When
fully operational later this year, the $20 million USC plant will provide 85%
of the Columbia campus' energy requirements using renewable, locally sourced
wood residue. It will also reduce greenhouse gases by 20,000 tonnes per year.
Construction is currently underway on a Nexterra biomass gasification plant
that will provide domestic hot water and heat for the $600-million Dockside
Green residential and commercial development on Victoria's Inner Harbour.
