ST. JOHN'S, May 28, 2011 /CNW/ - The Co-operative Housing Federation of
Canada (CHF Canada) announced today that Gerry Kennedy will receive the
2011 Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation award for outstanding
contribution to co-operative housing.
Gerry Kennedy recently retired from his post as Senior Executive
Director, Newfoundland and Labrador Housing. For more than a decade,
Kennedy played an instrumental role in ensuring that Newfoundland and
Labrador housing co-ops received the capital investment they needed to
make badly-needed improvements to their properties.
"Gerry is a worthy and fitting recipient of this award," said CHF Canada
President Wes Hosler. "Housing conditions have improved for all co-op
members in this province as a result of his personal commitment to
affordable housing for the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador."
The award will be presented Saturday, May 28 at 11:15 am during CHF
Canada's annual meeting in the St. John's Conference Centre. The
General Manager of CMHC's Atlantic Business Centre, Christina Haddad,
will make the presentation.
The mayors of St. John's and Mount Pearl, Denis O'Keefe and Randy Simms,
will be on hand for the opening of the meeting at 9:30 am.
More than 600 people are in St. John's from housing co-ops across the
country for the annual meeting of the Co-operative Housing Federation
Later in the day, delegates will vote on resolutions that call on
government to help protect Canada's affordable co-ops, and to develop
an accountability framework for federal spending on housing, to ensure
better outcomes for nearly four million Canadians in need of decent
housing they can afford.
CHF Canada is the national voice of the Canadian co-operative housing
movement. Its members include over 900 non-profit housing co-operatives
and other organizations across Canada. More than a quarter of a
million Canadians live in housing co-ops, in every province and
