Research highlights need for common sense approach
TORONTO, Sept. 24 /CNW/ - New research based on interviews with women
from all across Canada suggests that much of our traditional thinking about
weight issues may be wrong. Working with a team of qualitative research
professionals, Herbal Magic conducted group discussions across the country to
hear women's feelings about weight gain and its impact on their daily lives.
Their findings indicate that the most common feeling shared by women in regard
to weight issues is a strong sense of loss.
"The women we studied often felt they had lost something in gaining
weight; that they'd lost a sense of who they once were, often communicating
that they had lost themselves" said Dr. Gerry Derganc, Licensed Naturopathic
Doctor and member of the Herbal Magic Scientific Advisory team. "This was a
key revelation for us: to hear women communicating an overwhelming desire to
regain their lost energy, lost confidence, and former youthful spirit."
In contrast to established thinking about weight loss programs, this
study found that women don't necessarily aspire to achieve an ideal future
state when it comes to dieting or lifestyle change. Instead, most women long
to return to a former point in their lives; to a point when they used to feel
good about their bodies, a memory of a certain dress they used to wear, or
other memorable moment in their younger lives.
Through scores of interviews, the Herbal Magic team learned that this
sense of loss creeps up on women over the years, as their day-to-day life gets
in the way of themselves. The researchers heard powerful emotional reactions
to weight issues and the impact that being overweight can have on a woman's
energy levels and sense of vitality, her self-perception and her emotional
Many of the women interviewed had tried diet programs to tackle weight
loss in the past, typically with limited success. Diets were perceived by many
as daunting and frequently ineffective, with many programs requiring
significant and often unrealistic lifestyle changes and deprivations - cutting
out the very foods that bring most pleasure and comfort.
"What's needed is a common sense approach," said Dr. Derganc.
"Self-guided diet programs and complicated meal plans are impractical and
often ineffective for most women. If you have a toothache, do you take it upon
yourself to pull the tooth or do you go to a dentist? A key to healthy weight
loss and regaining that lost vitality is to have expert support and coaching
to help women stay focused on their long term goals."
When looking for a weight loss system, Dr. Derganc recommends three
important factors to consider:
- Real Food - people should look to systems that incorporate real food,
not complicated menus and meal plans. The menus proposed during the
program should be similar to what they would usually eat. As losing
weight relies on consistent healthy eating, it is important that
people don't rely solely on specialized, prepackaged foods. People
should be taught how to eat well and sensibly both at home and while
- Personal Coaching - one-on-one support and education can make an
enormous difference in a healthy weight loss system. The coach should
teach people to understand how to lose weight through nutritional
choices and keep it off. The coach should also motivate and encourage
people throughout their weight loss journey.
- Natural Products - many natural supplements can be of real benefit in
helping with appetite control and suppressing cravings. Knowing which
natural products to take and when can be a challenge. A common sense
system should include clear guidelines and specially-designed
products tailored to work as an added support to the weight loss
By listening carefully to the needs of real women, Herbal Magic has taken
a common sense approach to help women reclaim their lost confidence,
rediscover their former energy, and keep the weight off for the long term.
