New regulation - SPORTS FISHING OF ALL REDHORSE AND SUCKER PROHIBITED

    MONTREAL, April 24 /CNW Telbec/ - Starting on April 1, 2009, catching and
keeping any species of redhorse or sucker is prohibited across most of the
known range of the copper redhorse.
    The Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune (MRNF) informs
sports fishers that it is prohibited to catch redhorse and sucker in the
following areas:

    - in the Outaouais river, from the Highway 40 bridge (Ile-aux-Tourtes
      bridge) to Lac Saint-Louis;
    - in the St. Lawrence river, downstream from the Beauharnois and Pointe-
      des-Cascades dams, including Lac Saint-Louis, to the power transmission
      line at Sorel-Tracy;
    - in rivière des Prairies, downstream from the Hydro-Québec dam;
    - in rivière des Mille-Iles;
    - in the Richelieu, Yamaska and Noire rivers (prohibited since 1998).

    If redhorse or sucker are caught accidentally, they must be immediately
and carefully returned to the water. The catching of sucker is prohibited
because it is hard to distinguish from redhorse. However, carp may be caught
and kept, because the species is not threatened and is easy to identify.
    The new regulation is intended to provide better protection for the
copper redhorse, a species threatened with extinction that is found only in
Québec. The regulation will help protect reproductive copper redhorse, which
are becoming rarer and older. Posters outlining the regulation will be placed
in the main fishing areas concerned, and a campaign to raise awareness among
fishers is under way.
    The MRNF asks all citizens to continue to collaborate by reporting any
poaching or other action liable to degrade wildlife or wildlife habitats by
calling S.O.S. Braconnage toll-free at 1 800 463-2191, or by contacting the
nearest wildlife protection office
(www.mrnf.gouv.qc.ca/fr/faune-adresses-regions). The service is free and
confidential.
