New leader for Ontario union

TORONTO, Jan. 17 /CNW Telbec/ - Ontario members of the Communications,
Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada have elected Bob Huget as the new
Regional Vice-President, replacing the retiring Cec Makowski.
He was elected Jan. 15 at special conference of union delegates in
Toronto. Kim Ginter was acclaimed as an Administrative Vice-President and John
Edwards returns as an Administrative Vice-President.
At the helm of the largest union in the Ontario forest, energy,
communications and media sectors, Mr. Huget will continue to provide
leadership on the issues that matter to our members, and indeed to all
workers.
"We will move forward with a clear focus and sound strategies to deal
with the negative impacts of today's workplace realities," he says. "We will
advance these strategies at the bargaining table and in provincial and federal
legislatures, and we will work hand in hand with the broader labour movement
to achieve our members' goals."

Bob Huget is a long-time labour and social activist who was elected to
the Ontario legislature in 1990 where he served as the NDP MPP for Sarnia
until 1995. A strong voice on union issues and health and safety in
particular, he became national representative with the CEP in 1995. Mr. Huget
went on to be elected as the Administrative Vice-President for Ontario in
2000, a position he held until yesterday's election.
