Visa Canada releases updated classroom-ready financial literacy resource
TORONTO, Feb. 6 /CNW/ - Visa Inc. announced today in Canada the launch of
its newly revised financial literacy resource, Choices & Decisions: Taking
Charge of Your Financial Life. Originally published in 1996, Choices &
Decisions is an in-class resource used by educators across the country to help
students and young adults set financial goals, develop budgets, identify how
and when to use credit and the basics of the banking system.
"Whether you're teaching math, career education or business, the Choices
& Decisions program offers great lessons teachers can use to help enhance
their students' financial literacy," said Martin Runge, President, British
Columbia Business Educators Association, teacher, and member of the Choices &
Decisions Educator Review panel.
Choices & Decisions includes practical, ready-to-use, lesson plans
designed by classroom teachers for use in today's school. Each lesson contains
goals, lesson objectives, timelines, teacher notes, teaching instructions and
evaluation suggestions. There are supplemental activities to help engage all
levels of students and the lesson plans include overheads, quizzes and student
activity worksheets. Each of the 15 lessons are designed to give teachers' the
information they need to help their students understand financial planning and
budgeting, develop better money management skills, set goals and start
planning for financial milestones like attending a post-secondary institution,
moving out or buying a car.
The updated resource, which now also includes information to help
students protect themselves from financial fraud, was developed by a panel of
educators to meet curriculum requirements for high schools across the country.
Teachers can order hard copies of the resource or download copies of Choices &
Decisions through www.practicalmoneyskills.ca.
"The new Choices & Decisions kit has been updated so that it continues to
be relevant to today's students," said Amy Cole, Acting Head of Corporate
Communications, Visa Canada. "We've already received over 700 requests from
teachers for the new resource, which is available in French and English, and
believe that it offers a comprehensive suite of materials that will help
students make informed financial decisions."
For over 12 years, Visa Canada's free Choices & Decisions financial
literacy program has helped more than 500,000 Canadian students better
understand the fundamentals of budgeting, saving and the wise use of credit.
Visa Canada's Practical Money Skills website offers information for consumers,
and a companion brochure to the Practical Money Skills website in English and
French is also available in Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Punjabi.
As part of this ongoing commitment to financial literacy, Visa Inc. has
