BRIGHTON, ON, April 5 /CNW/ - Farmers' Markets Ontario (FMO), the
provincial association that represents Ontario's over 130 farmers' markets, is
gearing up for an exciting new market concept this coming season. Leading the
new generation of markets are four dynamic individuals elected at the FMO
Annual General Meeting recently held in St. Catharines, Ontario.
The new Chair is Philip Powell from Ottawa, Vice-Chair is Mike O'Shea of
Granton, Treasurer is Diane Garrington of St. Catharines, and Member at Large
is Lynne Brown of Thunder Bay.
Philip Powell is the City of Ottawa's full-time manager for the ByWard
and Parkdale Markets. Philip is no stranger to Farmers' Markets Ontario - he
is a founding member and served on the board and executive as treasurer in the
1990s. Philip has provided leadership on the Culinary Tourism and Food Safety
Matters at Farmers' Markets initiatives.
Mike O'Shea hails from Granton, north of London Ontario where he
cultivates over 300 acres and sells at the farm gate and at the Grand Bend, St
Marys and Stratford Farmers' Markets.
Diane Garrington is the Special Events Coordinator with the City of
St. Catharines and is coordinator of the city's 140 year old Farmers' Market.
Lynne Brown is a culinary herbs grower and Director for the Thunder Bay
These newly-elected Board members will be leading FMO as it prepares the
launch of the province's first certified farmers' markets in Toronto this
summer. Stage two of the initiative hopes to see a farmer certification
program rollout across the province in 2008.
FMO Executive Director Robert Chorney says "It's simple. We see these
certified markets as a way of ensuring that the customer gets what they expect
when they come to a farmers' market - fresh fruits and vegetables from the
farmer that grew them!" Stay tuned for more information in early April on this
exciting, new generation of farmers' markets.
