New Brunswick Housing Starts Down Slightly in September

MONCTON, Oct. 8 /CNW/ - According to Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation's preliminary data(1), residential construction in September of
2008 produced a total of 355 starts in New Brunswick's urban centres, down
from 367 units during the same period last year.
"Single starts, which have exceeded last year's pace throughout the year
had another strong month in September, although year-over-year growth for the
month was modest," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for New
Brunswick.
In September, 183 single starts were recorded in New Brunswick's urban
centres compared to 177 units during the same period last year. "An increase
in single starts in both Saint John and Fredericton was offset by a decline in
Moncton, leading to the modest overall increase for the month of September,"
continued Gautreau.
Multiple starts in provincial urban centres were down 9.5 per cent to 172
units in September, compared to 190 units during the same month last year.
Year-to-date, multiple starts were down 6 per cent to 1,026 units.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in September were
down 20 per cent to 17,644 units compared to last year's monthly total of
22,033. Single-detached starts were down 23 per cent to 6,299 units, while
multiple starts were down 18 per cent in September to 11,345 units compared to
13,806 units during the same period last year. In the Atlantic region, total
starts were essentially unchanged with 1,030 new units started in September
compared to 1,029 units in September of last year.
