New Brunswick Housing Starts Decline in July

MONCTON, Aug. 11 /CNW/ - According to Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation's preliminary data(1), residential construction in July of 2008
produced a total of 364 starts in New Brunswick's urban centres, down from 380
units during the same period last year.
"Multiple starts, which had bolstered total starts in urban centres
across the province throughout the first six months of the year were down in
July, leading to a year-over-year decline in total starts for the month," said
Claude Gautreau, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for New Brunswick.
In July, multiple starts in provincial urban centres were down to
170 units, compared to 185 units last year. "A significant decline in multiple
starts in Greater Moncton, particularly apartment starts, led to lower total
starts in provincial urban centres in July," continued Gautreau. Multiple
starts in both Saint John and Fredericton were higher in July compared to the
same period last year.
Single starts in provincial urban centres were essentially unchanged in
July, with 194 units compared to 195 during the same month last year. Single
starts were up in Saint John, with small decreases in both Moncton and
Fredericton.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts in July were down
17 per cent to 14,444 units compared to last year's monthly total of 17,367.
Single-detached starts were down 26 per cent to 6,911 units, while multiple
starts were down 6 per cent in July to 7,533 units compared to 8,005 units
during the same period last year. In the Atlantic region, 1,000 new units were
started in July compared to 956 units in July of last year.
