New Brunswick Housing Starts Decline in January

MONCTON, NB, Feb. 9 /CNW/ - According to Canada Mortgage and Housing
Corporation's (CMHC's) preliminary data(1), residential construction in
January produced a total of 125 starts in New Brunswick's urban centres
compared to 187 units during the same period last year.
"Total urban starts for the month of January trailed the pace set last
year during the same period, with a similar decline in both single and
multiple starts," said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's senior market analyst for New
Brunswick.
Single starts in provincial urban centres were down 35.1 per cent in
January with a total of 48 units compared to last year's total of 74 units for
the month. Meanwhile, 77 multiple starts were recorded in January of 2009,
compared to 113 units during the same month last year. "With an anticipated
softening in demand for new homes in 2009, the decline in residential starts
in urban centres observed in January was not unexpected," continued Gautreau.
In urban centres across Canada, total housing starts recorded in January
declined by 40 per cent, down to 7,244 compared to last year's total of
12,153. Single-detached starts decreased 44 per cent to 2,512 units, while
multiple unit starts were down 38 per cent from 7,648 units last year to 4,732
units this year. In the Atlantic region, 348 new units were started in January
2009 compared to 385 units during the same period in 2008.
As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of
experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally
sustainable, and affordable homes - homes that will continue to create vibrant
and healthy communities and cities across the country.
