New Brunswick Housing Starts Decline in December

MONCTON, NB, Jan. 9 /CNW Telbec/ - Total housing starts in New
Brunswick's urban centres for December trailed last year's level for the
month. According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation's preliminary
data(1), 123 residential starts were recorded in December, down from 233 units
during the same month in 2007.
"As anticipated, residential housing starts moderated in the latter part
of 2008, with fewer single and multiple starts in December compared to the
previous year's monthly total", said Claude Gautreau, CMHC's Senior Market
Analyst for New Brunswick. In the province's urban centres, 82 single starts
were recorded in December compared to 137 units during the same period last
year.
Multiple starts in the province's urban centres were also down in
December with 41 units compared to 96 last year. Nevertheless, activity in
2008 remained strong as multiple starts in provincial urban centres were up
10.1 per cent to 1,464 units. Meanwhile, annual single starts were essentially
unchanged in 2008 with a 0.4 per cent increase to 1,676 units at the end of
December. "Although starts declined in December, residential construction
activity was strong in historical terms throughout the year in New Brunswick's
urban centres", continued Gautreau.
In urban centres across Canada, 10,487 total housing starts were recorded
in December resulting in a 6 per cent decline from the 11,157 starts in
December 2007. Single-detached starts decreased 29 per cent to 4,335 units,
while multiple unit starts were up 22 per cent: from 5,061 last year to 6,152
units this year. In the Atlantic region, 574 new units were started in
December 2008 compared to 651 units during the same period in 2007.
