MONTREAL, Sept. 4 /CNW Telbec/ - Since 1999, NetCorps Canada
International, an initiative of Industry Canada, has provided opportunities
for young Canadians to participate in overseas volunteer work placements in
the field of Information and Communication Technologies.
Lasting a minimum of five months, NetCorps placements take place in
Africa, Latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe. The youth who participate in
this program contribute to reinforcing the communications and information
management capacities of the developing-country organizations that host them.
These mandates are fulfilled in a variety of sectors: governance, education,
health, gender equity, and environment.
In addition to living out a unique cultural experience, NetCorps
volunteers share their technological know-how (Web, database, software, etc.)
with communities and organizations in developing countries.
NetCorps placements are coordinated by nine Canadian non-governmental
organizations (Alternatives, Canadian Crossroads International (CCI), CUSO,
the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), Human Rights
Internet (HRI), Canada World Youth (CWY), Oxfam-Québec, the Canadian Society
for International Health (CSIH) and VSO-Canada) and funded by the Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA), which recently took over the program
from Industry Canada.
240 volunteer placements overseas are available this year.
