ROUYN-NORANDA, QC, Feb. 4 /CNW Telbec/ - The 45 Steelworkers at Garage
Thibault Chevrolet, Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick et GMC in Rouyn-Noranda have
accepted, in a 93% majority vote, an employment contract that includes the
implementation of a pension plan, among other improvements. "Our people are
very satisfied. They now have a good collective agreement that includes a
pension plan, wage increases and training support. They are proud to be
members of the Steelworkers' union," stated Marc Thibodeau, union staffer with
the United Steelworkers (FTQ).
The wage increases will equal 2.25% annually for a five-year period, with
a minimum raise of $0.35 per hour. The average hourly rate is $20. "We
insisted on a minimum increase, in order to ensure that employees in lower job
classifications are eligible for reasonable raises," continued Marc Thibodeau.
The union also secured a $650 signing bonus, which will be paid into the
pension fund that the company is required to set up by March 30, 2008.
The Steelworkers' Union also obtained improved training benefits in the
form a higher meal allowance for workers required to attend off-premises
training sessions. Employees will also be eligible for additional payouts if
they score 80% or more on their qualifying examinations for the following
three courses: Basic mechanic (a payout of $200), Master mechanic ($400) and
Senior master mechanic ($1,000).
The final improvement was in the area of health and safety, where the
union negotiated a half-hour of employer-paid preparation time for health and
safety committee members in the lead-up to the monthly meeting with
