ISTANBUL, Turkey, Oct. 9 /CNW/ - NBA Cares along with Minnesota
Timberwolves players and team owner Glen Taylor joined with a network of
distributors from Starkey Canada and the Starkey Hearing Foundation to
distribute much-needed hearing aids to 1,106 children in Istanbul last week.
The mission was done to coincide with the Timberwolves participation in NBA
Europe Live presented by EA SPORTS(TM). The children received more than 2,200
hearing aids during the four-day mission, running Oct. 2 thru 5. NBA Cares
joined the Starkey Hearing Foundation in an effort to fulfill the foundation's
commitment to helping the world to hear.
"It's a very humbling experience to go on a trip like this and see the
incredible need that exists in the world," said Taylor. "But it's also very
rewarding to know that we helped so many people hear, many for the first time
ever. I'm grateful that we were able to work with the Starkey Hearing
Foundation and NBA Cares to make this mission a success."
On hand to assist Taylor and Bill Austin, founder of Starkey Hearing
Foundation, were NBA Commissioner David Stern, the entire Timberwolves team
and NBA Legends Clyde Drexler and Julius "Dr.J" Erving. As a part of the
mission, the children fitted with hearing aids also received training on
hearing aid care and maintenance and a supply of hearing aid batteries.
The Starkey Hearing Foundation and NBA Cares also partnered with Tac, a
local Turkish company that sponsored the dedication of a new NBA Cares Learn &
Play Center at Avcilar Ataturk Ilkogretim Okulu school in Istanbul, to give 50
of the children who received hearing aids tickets to the Timberwolves game
against Turkish professional team Efes Pilsen Istanbul on Oct.6.
